About Deering Bay Condos
Deering Bay is probably the best kept
secret on Biscayne Bay. Two hundred and twenty acres of
land at the southern point of Coral Gables invite those
who are seeking both privacy and harmony with nature.
The entrance to the club is lined with rows of tropical
palms leading to an Arnold Palmer 18 -hole championship
designed golf course nestled among canals, lagoons and
picturesque landscapes. Ibis and egrets roam freely and
manatees can be spotted swimming in the waterways. Three
deep water marinas allow direct access to the Atlantic
and Biscayne Bay and the endless pleasures of boating in
this region.
Deering Bay has been designed for only two hundred and
eighty six residents leaving plentiful open spaces between residences. The distinct Mediterranean style reminiscent of
fourteenth century Tuscany adds a certain warmth and charm to the
apartments, club villas and custom built luxury estates. The new Tower
Residences with the most breathtaking vistas imaginable have private
elevators and guest suites.
The Club House at Deering Bay offers chic surroundings
and impeccable service; fine dining ,full concierge service and a wine
cellar where your own vintages can be stored !
Mornings can be started with a visit to the Fitness Center or a game of
tennis on one the seven Hr-tru courts at the club. Deering Bay is a hidden gem , far from the madding
crowd but just half an hour away from Miami International Airport. Many
of the best schools in South Miami are just minutes around the corner.

THE LEGACY OF DEERING BAY
Cutler was famous for its high ground,
its hardwood hammock, its lush vegetation and its
accessibility to Biscayne Bay. Although settlers cut a
road through the hammock to Coconut Grove, Cutler
remained a place apart. Dr. S. H. Richmond opened the
Richmond Inn that catered to the kind of people who were
attracted to Cutler’s natural beauty and seclusion. One
of those people was Charles Deering.
Charles Deering, and his brother James
came to Coconut Grove to visit their father William
Deering, founder of International Harvester, at
his winter home. Both brothers fell in love with South
Florida and soon built their own homes on the Bay. James
chose a site near his father in the Brickell Hammock and
built a magnificent home he called Viscaya. Charles
chose a more remote site in Buena Vista (later became
Bay Point).
By 1915, however, Charles became
discontent with the intrusion of civilization – the
noise of the new automobiles, the sound of the
locomotive. He sold his Buena Vista property and moved
to Cutler, eventually buying up and walling in the
entire town, including the Richmond Inn. He hired
Phineas Paist, the supervising architect of Coral
Gables, who had also worked on Villa Viscaya, to design
an Italian-style mansion for him. Deering also restored
the Richmond Inn and made it part of his new home, now
known as the Deering Estate.
Although Villa Viscaya has been opened
to the public for more than thirty years, until very
recently, when Dade County acquired the property, the
Charles Deering Estate remained hidden from public view
– a mysterious world of its own. The Deering brothers
left South Florida a legacy of unsurpassed dedication to
excellence. Viscaya is considered to be one of the
grandest homes in America and the Charles Deering Estate
is equally unique, containing natural, archaeological,
architectural and historical treasures. Both estates are
living proof of a family’s ability to live well while
respecting and protecting the natural environment.
For those who search for the kind of
elegant, tasteful seclusion that the Deerings enjoyed,
there is only one place left. Deering Bay offers the
last chance to experience both privacy and luxury on
glorious Biscayne Bay.

Deering Bay Rare and Getting Rarer
Is the Deering Bay golf and marina community on Biscayne
Bay a truly great example of the best in coastal boating
lifestyles? It all comes down to who you want to
believe: the companies that build the finest private
real estate developments in the world or a cantankerous
two hundred pound American crocodile they call
Snaggletooth. Recently the Builders Association of
South Florida (BASF) Best Awards were presented for this
year's selection of the finest residential properties in
South Florida. Watermark Communities, Inc. (WCI), the
current developers of Deering Bay won a bushel of awards
at the high end of the market including platinum and
gold medals for the new 12 story, Verona and Siena
buildings at Deering Bay.
With so many high-class residential
buildings in South Florida, two at one property speaks
volumes about the appeal of the residences, which stand
above this lush waterfront community. Add in the three
marinas, the amazing Arnold Palmer golf course,
carefully carved from the mangrove shoreline. Add the
unobstructed views of Biscayne Bay's pristine and
protected waters and you suspect that this is something
special in coastal living.
Then there is the Snaggletooth point
of view. Since the developers have carefully preserved
the natural setting of Deering Bay, the very rare and
endangered American crocodiles have found a home in the
nearby mangroves. Occasionally they sun on their own
little island. Snaggletooth got so comfortable she would
occasionally visit the golfers at the driving range. As
her visits became more frequent, it was decided to
relocate her, hundreds of miles away on Florida's
Southwest Coast where she would be less likely to
confuse a golf ball with one of her eggs.
Once you have lived at Deering Bay, Naples Florida just
doesn't cut it. Or, at least that is what Snaggletooth
decided. It took her almost a year, but she swam and
walked the several hundred miles around the tip of
Florida, across Florida Bay and the Everglades then up
through the Biscayne National Wildlife Preserve and down
the Cutler Channel that leads to Deering Bay. One
morning, to everyone's surprise, her distinctive
Snaggletooth smile was again seen on her sunny little
island. She had found her way home.
We invite you to Deering Bay now for
two simple reasons. WCI and the current residents have
decided that there will be only 286 residences at
Deering Bay and if we waited a few months, the new
residences and the spaces at the new marina would be
gone. Those who are familiar with Florida sport fishing
and boating know already that South Biscayne Bay is one
of the finest fisheries in America, rich with bonefish,
permit, tarpon, snook and redfish. They know the reefs
are robust with grouper, snapper and kingfish. They know
that just beyond the reef, sailfish are abundant in the
fall, winter and spring while dolphin, tuna, and wahoo
can be taken in substantial number almost year-round.
Those from the Mid-Atlantic states who
are happy to run 50 miles on their way to reach the
fishing ground will be dazzled when they can stand on
their huge Deering Bay patio and see the edge of the
Gulf stream, 15 miles off in the distance. Between them
and The Stream is a grand shallow water sport fishery
that is minutes away. Why beat yourself up when you can
live so close to the sports you love? And then there is the golf.
Arnold Palmer created 18 holes of exhilarating beauty
set against a natural backdrop of protected mangroves
that separate this course from breathtaking Biscayne
Bay. This par-71 championship course winds gently around
the expansive Lago di Verona, Lago di Garda and a myriad
of other waterways. Named one of Florida's top 20
courses, expect a challenging experience for every skill
level. The WCI, developers have just begun to
take orders for the final residential tower in the
community, fulfilling their promise to maintain an
ultra-luxury, low-density, exclusive community.
"We've saved the best for last,'' said
Chris Hanlon, commercial development division president
for WCI. ``Milano will be our final and finest
residential tower, a 13-story building that complements
Verona and Siena towers and completes our Deering Bay
community.'' Milano at Deering Bay will be situated on a site that
takes full advantage of the area's spectacular views,
and will feature up to 45 luxurious residences including
four penthouse suites. Units range from the $800s to
over $2.5 million and offer a variety of floor plans,
including several three bedroom, 3 1/2 bath, family
room, and terrace combinations. Another floor plan
offers a four bedroom/4 1/2 bath layout with family room
and outdoor terrace. For those homeowners who wish even
more space, custom floor plans combining two units are
also available. This feature has proven especially
popular in Verona and Siena towers.
Three of the penthouse designs will be
two-story units, with dramatic views and private outdoor
roof terraces. Two lobby-level terrace residences will
have expansive private patios with direct access to the
pool, spa and deck area, and will feature lush
landscaping. Interior amenities throughout the
property are of the highest quality, including natural
wood finish cabinets, granite and marble countertops,
solid wood interior doors, and state-of-the-art
appliances such as Thermadore, Sub-Zero and Meilie.
Absolute Porche china will be used for the sinks and
toilets, with Jacuzzi whirlpool tubs in the Master.
Milano at Deering Bay has been designed by architect Robert Swedroe and
will be built by Coastal Construction. Both firms were
also responsible for creating Verona and Siena towers,
and as we said earlier, they have won numerous awards
for their work not to mention the approval of
Snaggletooth. The idea of building only 286
residences on 220 acres is reminiscent of the teaching
of Paolo Solari, the famed architect who preached the
wisdom of Arcology. His early work showed soaring
buildings surrounded by acres of open space. The
residents lived in comfort, if not Deering Bay style
luxury, and were enlightened and fulfilled by the
natural beauty that surrounded them.
Deering Bay features an array of other
amenities, including three private deep-water marinas,
Olympic-size pool, South Florida's only Arnold
Palmer-designed golf course, an elegant club house,
Har-Tru tennis courts and an innovative fitness center.
The towers blend Old World charm,
Mediterranean styles and understated luxury. With only
48 residences, there are no more than four units per
floor, with penthouse residences occupying the top two
floors. Two of the designs provide 2,635
square feet of area, including terraces and balconies.
The other two each come with 3,500 square feet. In
either case the wrap-around balconies providing
breathtaking views of the South Florida coast, the
sunrise, sunset and the glimmering City of Miami off in
the distance. Deering Bay Milano Residences Deering
Bay Siena Tower Residences
The penthouse homes, including the
interior and terraces occupy 5,510 square feet that
encompasses four bedrooms, five-and-a-half baths, family
room, library/den and a grand salon. Beyond the lobby is a covered veranda
offering access to five cabanas as well as heated
swimming pool, whirlpool spa, sun deck and pool pavilion
with barbecue grills, framed in a lush, environmentally
appropriate landscaping.
Deering Bay is a phase development
begun two decades ago, so its landscaping is verdant,
large and mature. It was also carefully selected to
reflect native horticulture and to thrive in South
Florida phases of dry, wet and heat. Like the
architecture, the landscaping has also won several
awards for its beauty and environmental responsibility. Deering Bay offers an active social
life for those who wish it. The center is the 30,000
square foot, Mediterranean-influenced club house. There
the club offers a formal dining room, a classy bar, a
sunny lunch spot, its own wine cellar, several fitness
centers, a golf pro-shop, tennis shop, showers and a
perfect pool. Ladies and gentlemen of leisure gather
almost every day for the sumptuous luncheon buffet.
Dinner is served ala carte each night. On Sunday the
sinful brunch is a tradition.
Deering Bay has two completed and
virtually sold-out marinas, both within walking distance
of residents' homes. The main marina has 77 slips
accommodating yachts up to 110 feet, while a 16-slip
marina is available for boats. Construction of the third marina is
underway. Adjacent to the few remaining homesites within
the gated community, the new 27 slip marina will have
sufficient space and draft for yachts in the 80 to 120
foot class. Captain Grant Haven, an old hand in
South Florida and Bahamian waters, is the dockmaster. He
and his staff are glad to assist boaters with everything
from arranging fresh bait and tackle for their next
outing to full maintenance of their vessels.
For those planning a yachting
excursion, Captain Haven enjoys coordinating boat trips
of all kinds to Key West and the Bahamas. "We're pleased to assist our boating
residents and members with their needs, and to help
familiarize new boating and fishing enthusiasts with the
surrounding waters," he said. There are no transient slips available
at the marina, but guests of owners can dock at the
marina with advance reservations, space permitting. The
Yacht Club is currently developing reciprocity
arrangements with other clubs. The marina is full
service including pump out, cable, and the latest in
shore power stations. Access to the marina is 1.5 miles
west off the Intracoastal Waterway at the Cutler Channel
in South Biscayne Bay. Capt Haven can be reached at -
305- 25652510 and the dockmasters monitor Channel 16.
The water is shallow after you leave
the ICW to access the Cutler Channel and is a consistent
7 feet at low tide from the head pin of the channel into
the marina. As is the case with any channel access in
Biscayne Bay, take no short cuts, approach at right
angles, pay attention to the depth sounder and line up
the markers. No live aboards are permitted at
Deering Bay. The marina rules allow yachts to remain in
the substantial shelter of the marina when storm
warnings are flown. Yacht slips are purchased separate
from residential properties. Non-resident membership are
available for the country club and yacht club. Deering Bay Yacht and Country Club,
13605 Old Cutler Rd., is reached from S. Dixie Highway
south of downtown Miami via Lejeune Road (SW 42nd
Avenue) and Old Cutler Road. An information and sales
center is outside the 24-hour manned gatehouse entrance.

Brief History of The Gables:
Just south of downtown Miami lies beautiful Coral
Gables, or simply "The Gables" as it's known to natives.
This planned section of town is an oasis of quiet
stately homes and upscale shopping and restaurants in
the heart of Miami. If you're tired of South Beach and
the downtown scene and are looking for some classy fun,
take a trip to the Gables.
Coral Gables is built in the
Mediterranean Revival style thanks to the work of James
Deering on his estate, Villa Vizcaya. Deering built
Vizcaya in 1914 using only authentic materials from
Italy and Spain, as well as incorporating large pieces
of real European castles that were dissembled, shipped
here by boat and reassembled on site. Many of these
large murals, ceilings and tapestries from Europe remain
at Deering to be seen today. Inspired by Vizcaya, George
Merrick wanted to bring the images and architecture of
Spain to more of the area. His vast land holdings gave
him room to work, but he wanted to be known for more
than his wealth; he wanted to create a special suburb of
Miami that brought to light the Spanish influence of the
area. Along with other master craftsmen, landscape
artists and city planners, Coral Gables began to take
shape. Within four years of its conception, Coral Gables
was incorporated in 1925.
Perhaps the greatest monument to the
Mediterranean Revival style stands today- the Biltmore
Hotel. Inspired by the Cathedral of Seville in Spain,
it's tower today stands as a recognizable symbol to all
Miamians. The hotel was erected in 10 short months and
has not changed even its exterior color to this day. As
a world-class hotel it brings visitors from the world
over; natives flock to the Biltmore to enjoy its spa
offerings and beautiful coral pool.
As the recession slowed building and
real estate development, so The Gables stopped its
growth in its prime. Unfortunately, the Mediterranean
Style never regained its full strength and beauty. In
the 1950s, Miracle Mile sprang up, a brick-paved section
of road on Coral Way between LeJeune Road and Douglas
Road. With its upscale boutiques and specialty stores it
brought heightened commerce to the area and inspired
more of the same kinds of shops to open their doors soon
after. Today, special incentives are offered to builders
and designers who design with the Mediterranean Revival
style in mind.

Gables Attractions:
Coral Gables offers plenty to do within short driving
distance of downtown Miami. From art and architecture to
fine dining and shopping, make a day or weekend of Coral
Gables and you won't be disappointed.
If you're interested in the
Mediterranean architecture, make sure to visit Vizcaya.
Built in the early 1900s, it stands today much as it did
when it was built. Tours are offered daily. The Biltmore
is also an unchanged tribute to Merrick's vision. While
you can't visit the rooms, the grand lobby is truly
impressive. Coral Gables City Hall is the city's most
important publicly-owned building; make sure to stop in
to see its distinctive portico and beautiful interior
wall murals.
One sport is associated with Coral
Gables: golf! The Biltmore Golf Course (1210 Anastasia
Ave) is world famous and home to several PGA Tour
events. This public golf course has the beautiful
backdrop of the Biltmore, little water, a liberal
walking policy, reasonable greens fees and is
challenging enough for pros while being playable for
beginners. The Grenada Golf Course (2001 Grenada Blvd)
is a 9-hole golf course with no water hazards; it's not
as challenging as the Biltmore, but this par 36 course
is a more relaxing round and an exceptional value.
The Venetian Pool (2701 DeSoto Blvd)
draws visitors from all over the world. Built in 1923
from a coral rock quarry, it is spring-fed and is
surrounded by grottos, two waterfalls and coral caves.
Fairchild Tropical Garden (10901 Old Cutler Road) is a
beautiful day-long (at least!) retreat from reality.
With its collection of tropical plants and flowers,
palms, ferns and flowering vines, trails around lakes
and through groves, mangrove forests, rainforest display
and orchid display (among much else!) you'll have little
time left for the shows, educational programs, bookstore
and special events displays. Make sure you bring walking
shoes and plenty of water!
The shopping and dining can't be
missed. Miracle Mile (Coral Way, between LeJeune Road
and Douglas Road) and the Village of Merrick Park
(LeJeune Road and Ponce de Leon Blvd) offer world-class
boutiques, antiques, galleries and 5-star dining. The
world's best restaurants can be found here in The
Gables, including The Palm (Steakhouse & Seafood), Caffe
Abbracci (Northern Italian), Pascal's on Ponce (New
French), Miss Saigon Bistro (Vietnamese), and Norman's
As you can see, there is plenty for
everyone to do in Coral Gables. If you are visiting
Miami, make sure you leave time to see the beauty and
tranquility of Coral Gables. If you live here, take
advantage of all this area has to offer.
Deering Bay welcomes future residents of
Verona at Deering Bay Towers
By Sissy De Maria
Deering Bay Yacht & Country Club
recently hosted a cocktail reception to welcome future
residents of its latest Mediterranean-style luxury jewel
— the 14-story mid-rise, Verona Tower. Pictured at Verona owners welcoming
party at Deering Bay Yacht and Country Club are (l-r)
Don Lebaron, purchasing for Verona Tower; Chris Hanlon,
vice president and senior project manager for WCI; Wanda
Cross, vice president of sales and marketing for WCI,
and Tom Murphy Jr., president of Coastal Construction. More than 100 guests attended the
elegant evening featuring a gourmet Italian buffet, live
jazz music, hand-rolled Macabi cigars, and presentations
on Verona’s construction by Wanda Cross, vice president
of sales and marketing at Watermark Communities Inc.
(WCI), the developer of Deering Bay. Slated to be completed in January
2000, Verona is Deering Bay’s first luxury tower being
developed by WCI, which purchased the property in 1997.
Built by Coastal Construction, one of Florida’s leading
commercial and residential builders, the new tower will
feature 48 residences — four per floor — with penthouse
residences occupying the top two floors. Prices range
from the $500,000s to just under $2 million. Floor plans range in size from 2,160
to 2,740 square feet of air-conditioned living area, in
addition to its oversized terraces and balconies. The
spectacular penthouses feature up to 4,475 square feet
and offer a den/library in addition to its formal
living/dining room, family room, four bedrooms, and
five-and-a-half bathrooms. Overlooking Lago di Verona, a scenic
lake in the center of the development, Verona’s
extraordinary floor plans offer views of Biscayne Bay,
Deering’s magnificent natural hammocks setting, and the
championship fairways of its legendary 18-hole Arnold
Palmer-designed golf course. Verona at Deering Bay is already 80 percent sold and
construction is right on schedule, according to Liz
McCormick, director of sales for Deering Bay. The 11th
floor has just been poured and the 12th is underway.
"We have received an incredible
response from home buyers. Verona’s sales have surpassed
our original projections and in keeping with the WCI
tradition, we anticipate selling out before we receive
our certificate of occupancy. Demand has been
spectacular, we only have eight residences left."
Located on the southern tip of Coral
Gables, Deering Bay Yacht & Country Club is a 220-acre
private community overlooking Biscayne Bay. Its unique
combination of a full country-club lifestyle,
championship golf, deep-water marinas and exquisite
residences is unprecedented in all of South Florida. Based in Bonita Springs, FL, Watermark
Communities Inc. Has enjoyed over 50 years of success in
master-planning communities across the nation in
growth-driven markets.
